He was baptised in the Dutch Reformed Church in Zwolle on 1 April 1790.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aitton began his ministry in Zuilichem and Nieuwaal, where he was inducted on 3 March 1811. From 1815 to 1817 he also served as an army chaplain. On 11 May 1817 he was inducted as a Dutch Reformed minister in Aalten, where he held the second ministerial post. One of his fellow ministers was the Revd Tjeerd Radsma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his ministry in Aalten, Aitton lived with his wife, Cornelia Alida Jacoba Swaan, at the former address Aalten 144a, now <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/plaats\/aalten\/hoekstraat\/15-17\/\">Hoekstraat 15\u201317<\/a>. The couple are recorded there in the population register for 1823\u20131850 and lived at the address until they left Aalten in 1826.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 26 March 1826 Aitton left Aalten for Hooge Zwaluwe. He subsequently served as minister in Monster (1828\u20131840) and Zevenbergen (1840\u20131855). He retired in 1855.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aitton was married to Cornelia Alida Jacoba Swaan, who was born in The Hague on 10 June 1791. They had several children, a number of whom were born in Aalten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of his sons also became ministers. Boudewijn Robbert Aitton (1823\u20131891) served as minister in Winterswijk from 1851. Rijk Otto Cornelis Aitton (1825\u20131911) served various Dutch Reformed congregations, including those in Zijderveld, Stavenisse and Melissant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aitton\u2019s father was also a minister, so the ministry extended across three generations of the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Return to Aalten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After his retirement, Aitton and his wife returned to Aalten. According to the population register for 1860\u20131870, they lived at the former address Aalten 62, now Stationsstraat 4. Aitton is listed in the register as a retired minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He died in Aalten on 4 August 1863, aged 73.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1830 he published <em>De Doornstruik tot koning gemaakt<\/em>, issued in The Hague.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rijk Otto Aitton was born in Zwolle on 27 March 1790, the son of the minister Henricus Arnoldus Aitton and Nalida Cornelia van Rees.
