He grew up in a family of bakers and, like several of his brothers, chose the same trade. In Aalten he established his own bakery at <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/plaats\/aalten\/haartsestraat\/14\/\">Haartsestraat 14<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a family of bakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van Asselt came from the family of baker Peter Gerrit van Asselt in Linde near Vorden. Several sons in the family entered the same trade. A family history of Bakkerij Van Asselt explicitly states that, besides Piet and Gerard, <strong>Herman also became a baker and opened a bakery in Aalten<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Van Asselt bakery in Aalten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aalten business was located at Haartsestraat 14. Baker Wolter Vaags had previously operated here. A photograph from <strong>1963<\/strong> already shows Bakkerij Van Asselt at this location; H.C. van Asselt is also listed at this address in the 1967 directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original bakery building was later demolished. A new building was erected on the same site, which now has a different commercial use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Death<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herman Christiaan van Asselt died on <strong>5 July 2001 in Winterswijk<\/strong>, aged 66.
