{"id":187682,"date":"2022-03-27T21:56:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-27T19:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/plaats\/bredevoort\/landstraat\/"},"modified":"2026-09-19T13:46:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T11:46:19","slug":"landstraat","status":"publish","type":"plaats","link":"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/landstraat\/","title":{"rendered":"Landstraat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Landstraat is Bredevoort\u2019s oldest street and crosses the town from west to east, where it continues as <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/misterstraat\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Misterstraat<\/a>. Originally, Landstraat was an old long-distance road (<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heerweg_(Romeinse_Rijk)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>heerweg<\/em><\/a>) running through marshland. The higher ground within the marsh was a logical place to levy tolls, and this marked the beginning of Bredevoort itself. <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/zand\/bredevoort-castle\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bredevoort Castle<\/a> was founded on this rise to control toll collection at the crossing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landstraat begins at the ravelin where Tramstraat and Bolwerkweg end. Within the old centre it has several side streets. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/the-aalterpoort-city-gate\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aalterpoort<\/a> eastwards these include <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/prinsenstraat\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prinsenstraat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/kerkstraat\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kerkstraat<\/a>, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/koppelstraat\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Koppelstraat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/markt\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Markt<\/a>. The street then passes <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/vismarkt\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vismarkt<\/a> and Fekkengeste, before continuing past <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/ambthuiswal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ambthuiswal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/plaats\/bredevoort\/landstraat\/32\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Molenwal<\/a>. Before 1610, Molenwal was a street running along the town wall. After the earthen ramparts were constructed, it became a ramp leading up to <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/bastion-welgemoed\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bastion Welgemoed<\/a>. The surviving Molenwal is now a side street off Landstraat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landstraat ends before the Munsterbrug, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/bredevoort\/the-misterpoort-city-gate\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Misterpoort<\/a> once stood. From the Slingebeek onwards, the road is called
