The farm and surrounding land were owned by the Luva brush factory (Lurvink – Aalten).

Brushes were manufactured in the workshop behind the farmhouse until 1970. The company moved to the industrial estate and the factory at ‘t Dal stood empty for many years. It has since been converted into a home, with the original main form and characteristic industrial appearance largely preserved. Its substantial mass gives it a prominent place in this part of ‘t Dal.

‘t Dal 6 is the present address. Before 1955, the factory belonged to the then address Willemstraat 1, now Hogestraat 69-II.

The history of Lurvink Brush Factory

Lurvink Brush Factory is a family business in Aalten with a history stretching back at least two centuries. Archival research shows that various kinds of brushes were already being made from the beginning of the 19th century.

Jan Lurvink (1747–1823), a tailor from Aalten, and his wife Willemina Wenderink (1763–1832) had ten children. Civil-registration and notarial records show that five of their sons became brush makers. The first official reference appears in the marriage certificate of Arnoldus Lurvink (1789–1876), who married Johanna Geertruid Feldkamp in 1813 and was described as a brush maker. His younger brother Frederikus Reinirus Lurvink (1793–1842) married Maria Wilhelmina Joanna Balster in 1820 and was likewise recorded as a brush maker.

Family business at home

When Jan Lurvink died in 1823, three sons were still living at home: Gerhardus (1796), Bernardus (1799) and Henricus Bernardus (1805). All three worked as brush makers and had probably already begun doing so before their father’s death. In May 1823, Jan and Willemina sold their house to their son Gerhardus, who was described as a brush maker in the notarial deed. The same occupation was recorded on his 1828 marriage certificate when he married Joanna Oostendorp.

Registration and generational change

Aalten began keeping a population register in 1823. Willemina was then living with her three sons at Aalten 136, now Hoekstraat 4. All three sons were registered as brush makers.

Gerhardus Lurvink (1796) was the first to leave the trade. In 1836, he transferred the business to his brother Bernardus (1799), who married Hendrika Scheerder (1801) that same year. They had no children. At the wedding on 10 February 1836, the brothers Henricus Bernardus, Arnoldus and Gerhardus acted as witnesses, all described as brush makers.

In 1843, Henricus Bernardus Lurvink had a son whom he named Bernardus. On the birth certificate, the father was recorded as a brush maker. Bernardus, born in 1843, entered the employ of his uncle Bernardus (1799) around 1862 as an apprentice brush maker, as shown by the population register.

A new location for the factory

In 1861, Bernardus Lurvink (1799) bought a property at the Willemstraat/Hogestraat junction at auction for 960 guilders and established his brush factory there. In his will, he named his nephew Bernardus (1843) as heir and stated that he worked for him as a brush maker.

In 1876, Bernardus (1799) transferred the business to his nephew Bernardus (1843). The latter had married Johanna Wilhelmina Berendsen in 1872. Their son Martinus Johannes Joseph Lurvink was born in 1880; his father too was described as a brush maker on the birth certificate.

The business was registered with the Chamber of Commerce on 18 November 1897.

20th century

In the 1900–1910 population register, Bernardus (1843) was listed as “master brush maker”, while two of his sons, Martinus Johannes Joseph (1880) and Wilhelmus Gerhardus Johannes (1886), were registered as brush makers employed by their father.

A bill of exchange from 1905 and a payment receipt from 1911 carried the name ‘B. Lurvink en Zonen’. A postcard from 1913 still used that name. It is not known exactly when Martinus Johannes Joseph Lurvink (1880) took over management from his father, but an order confirmation from 1926 shows that the factory was then known as ‘M.J.J. Lurvink – Machinale Borstelmakerij’.

Martinus later established the partnership ‘Vennootschap onder firma M.J.J. Lurvink’. On 2 January 1961, his grandson Martinus Johannes Joseph Lurvink (1945), son of Gerhardus Johannes Bernardus Lurvink (1913), joined the company.

Aaltensche Courant, 14 November 1947

Relocation and continuation

In 1972, Fa.
