In the 1920s, the Vereniging tot Verbetering der Volkshuisvesting (Association for the Improvement of Public Housing) built eighteen workers’ houses in Aalten on the corner of Admiraal de Ruyterstraat and Van Heemskerckstraat.

This small neighbourhood was known in Aalten as the ‘Tuindorp’ — literally ‘garden village’ — a name reflecting a nationwide housing movement of the period.
