{"id":145114,"date":"2023-09-27T17:31:52","date_gmt":"2023-09-27T15:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/aalten-achteruit\/lourens-navis\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T11:30:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T09:30:31","slug":"lourens-navis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/society\/population\/biography\/lourens-navis\/","title":{"rendered":"Lourens Navis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-text-subtitle is-style-text-subtitle--1 wp-block-paragraph\">General Practitioner, Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-794e3cfa wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lourens Navis was born on 28 May 1870 as <a href=\"https:\/\/permalink.geldersarchief.nl\/1AC1CE2E0AEE452DBAB80BE02C35A796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lourens Schokkin<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/haart\/haartseweg-08-borninkhof\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Borninkhof<\/a> farm in the rural district of Haart (Aalten), son of the unmarried Janna Geertruid Schokkin. A few months later, on 12 August 1870, his mother married the schoolteacher Hendrik Navis, who recognised Lourens as his child, thereby legitimising him as his son. They went to live on the Kattenberg in Aalten, currently <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/aalten\/lichtenvoordsestraatweg-011\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lichtenvoordsestraatweg 11<\/a>. The family later moved to the corner of <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/aalten\/markt-20\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Landstraat\/Markt<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1900, Navis established a practice as a GP at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/rguZC2LHoErp4MpBA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prinsegracht<\/a> 53 in The Hague. On 30 January 1902, he married Johanna Theodora Hulsebos. Six children were born from this marriage: Elisabeth (1903), Janna Geertruid (1904), Johanna Theodora (1906), Hendrik (1909), <a href=\"https:\/\/oorlogsgravenstichting.nl\/personen\/108849\/thomas-haulog-navis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thomas Haulog<\/a> (1913), and Margaretha Catharina (1919).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On his 40th anniversary as a doctor, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in recognition of his extensive services to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lourens Navis passed away on 13 May 1940 in The Hague and was buried there at the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-loopbaan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1 July 1875\u20131 July 1882: Primary education;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 July 1882\u20131 July 1885: Pupil teacher;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 September 1885\u20131888: H.B.S.
