On Saturday afternoon, the scouts in Aalten were presented with their own brand-new clubhouse. This marked the end of a years-long struggle by this guild to obtain its own modest yet solid accommodation. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Aalten scouting movement<\/a> had occupied several different premises, but most were little more than \u201cshacks\u201d that eventually became fit only for demolition. As a result, this youth organisation repeatedly found itself without a home. The girls and boys in their familiar uniforms did not give up, however. Their work continued with determination and, thanks to the help of many people, they were finally able to move into premises of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road was not a bed of roses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Half hidden in the Veldhuisbosje on Haartsestraat stands a small building that many a youth club would be envious of. However, that the road to the completion of the clubhouse was not always a bed of roses was made abundantly clear in the opening speech by the chairman of the foundation board, Mr B. Garretsen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many difficulties had to be overcome, but, as Mr Garretsen put it, is this not the case with all buildings established through private initiative? It would have been a terrible shame, the chairman continued, if we could not have provided accommodation for these 80 boys and girls, because without this building, the entire scouting movement of the N.P.V. and N.P.G. in Aalten would have had to be disbanded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So something had to be done, and something was done. The building is there, it looks neat, but much is still missing, such as water and light, while the interior painting also leaves much to be desired. However, the board takes the view that they must first get out of debt before further work is carried out. As the building stands now, it has cost \u01927,000. An appeal will therefore be made to several wallets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooperation of many<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the many positive aspects, Mr Garretsen highlighted the cooperation of the municipal authorities. He thanked them for making the site available and for a contribution of \u01922,500. He also thanked S.J. van den Oever, head of the Christian Technical School<\/a> in Aalten, who designed the building and had it constructed by teachers Schuijtemaker and Van der Woestijne together with a group of 15-year-old pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Garretsen formally handed the building over to the scouts by presenting the keys to scoutmaster W. Prinsen. Several speakers then addressed the gathering. Mayor E.S. van Veen<\/a>, who attended with both aldermen, offered congratulations on behalf of the municipal authorities; Mrs Hartsuiker spoke for the headquarters of the Dutch Girl Guides; district commissioner Bosman represented the Winterswijk district; Akela Strating of Borculo attended as a headquarters assistant; and representatives of Aalten\u2019s clergy were also present. Scout groups from surrounding towns including Doetinchem, Neede, Ruurlo, Varsseveld and Eibergen attended as well. The Enschede Scouts Marching Band provided the music and gave a tattoo on the Market square on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should also be mentioned that the official opening ceremony was performed by Mayor E.S. van Veen. For this purpose, the ‘Burchtlanciers’, as the Aalten group is called, had built a drawbridge in front of the building. After it was lowered, Mr van Veen and the numerous guests crossed the bridge to the building. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
