From the mid-nineteenth century until well into the twentieth century, Aalten had a variety of church youth associations. These included the Dutch Reformed boys’ associations \u2018Josa\u2019, \u2018De Knipperbol\u2019 and \u2018Het Vendel\u2019, and the girls’ associations \u2018De Kaarsvlam\u2019 and \u2018Zonnestraal\u2019. Below are extracts from a number of newspaper articles about the Christian Young Men’s Association (C.J.V.) \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019. Further information about this and other church youth associations is very welcome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Report of the annual celebration of the Christian Young Men’s Association \u2018Timotheus\u2019 in Aalten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last Friday afternoon the Christian Young Men’s Association \u2018Timotheus\u2019 here celebrated its tenth anniversary. The opening celebration, held in the Dutch Reformed church<\/a>, was opened by Rev. Barneveld, after which Rev. Veen of Lichtenvoorde delivered a concise festive address on the words, \u2018In the multitude of the people is the king’s honour\u2019. When, in 1855, a number of young men came together to establish a world alliance, they laid down a foundation. While various associations have had to alter their principles or aims over the years, last year, when celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, the world alliance once again pledged loyalty to that same foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festive address was interspersed with six songs by the singing association \u2018Excelsior\u2019, which was also celebrating its first anniversary. Our townspeople may have thought of this first performance, as one of the later speakers remarked, that one cannot expect very much from a one-year-old child. If so, they were certainly mistaken, for the various songs were very well sung under the excellent direction of Mr A. Rots. It was a pity that there was not greater attendance. After this there was a break of more than an hour, and the celebration continued in the catechism room<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On entering, one immediately received a pleasant impression. The room had been transformed into a festive hall, attractively decorated with greenery and the national colours. After Psalm 65, verse 1, had been sung, the chairman opened the gathering by warmly welcoming the many people present. The officers’ reports showed that the association was flourishing: membership had risen to 28, the number of supporters to 63, while the treasurer reported a surplus of 44.90 guilders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chairman then said that he had to depart from the programme immediately because \u2018Timotheus\u2019 had the honour of having Rev. Mense from Nieuw-Stadskanaal in its midst. Rev. Mense said that he was delighted to be able to spend an evening among so many acquaintances and friends. Since his departure, the Young Men’s Association had gained both a singing group and a Boys’ Association. A Girls’ Association ought now to be founded as well. Aalten too should be able to say that it was making progress in spiritual life, and that would happen when every member stood firm for King Jesus. Our Christian congregation needed sharpshooters in the spiritual struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this address the members themselves took over. Recitations and dialogues, both serious and humorous, alternated throughout the evening. The dialogues in particular \u2013 three in all, one by the boys and two by the girls \u2013 were performed extremely well. The next speaker was Mr Bulten of Beekbergen, a former member of the association. He expressed his pleasure at being able once again to be among old friends. He then spoke about the origins of the Young Men’s Association. Founded more than fifty years earlier by a few young men in Amsterdam, that small group had since grown into a broad body of young men rallying around the banner of the Cross.<\/p>\n\n

It should also be mentioned that the various items on the programme were interspersed with songs, accompanied by Mr Nijhof’s fine organ playing, while several young girls were constantly busy providing the guests with refreshments. Shortly after ten o’clock Rev. Van de Plassche took the platform to give the closing address. He remarked that, while the joy could still be read on everyone’s faces, it was difficult already to bring the evening to a close. Yet everything must come to an end, including this exceptionally successful celebration. After thanking all those who had contributed to the success of the evening, he concluded with the wish that God might continue to bless \u2018Timotheus\u2019. After Hymn 180, verse 1, had been sung, everyone went home well satisfied.<\/p>\n\n

Silver jubilee of Christian Young Men’s Association \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday evening a meeting was held in the Dutch Reformed church here to mark the 25th anniversary of the Christian Young Men’s Association \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019. It opened with the singing of Psalm 68, verse 10. Rev. Van de Plassche led the prayers and, in his opening remarks, pointed out that the twenty-five-year existence of a Young Men’s Association was an event worth pausing over. He regretted that only one such association existed within the large Dutch Reformed congregation here, and expressed the hope that the jubilee would bring a substantial increase in membership. He concluded by expressing the wish that the members would remember the motto of the late Rev. Van Noort, chairman of the N.J.V.: \u2018Never forget Jesus\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festive speaker was Rev. J.W. van Petegem of Dinxperlo. After congratulating the members and former members, he said that although the invitation had initially filled him with some apprehension, he had nevertheless accepted it because he so enjoyed being among young people, where one best remains young oneself. After describing Israel’s struggle against Sisera, he stressed that God had been on Barak’s side against Sisera, and that this was why Barak had prevailed. For the same reason Deborah rejoiced that God had done it. The same applies to the life of an association. Human life is a life of struggle. Every day we must be ready to take up the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it is with our associations too. We have to struggle against spiritual wickedness, against the prince of this world. The Young Men’s Association will know what that means. Perhaps some have fallen in this struggle and since gone astray. How stands the struggle now? What are the results of these twenty-five years? Can the association truly celebrate \u2013 that is, rejoice with thanksgiving to God: are we victors? The Young Men’s Association is looked down upon by many, and many a young man has yielded to that contempt and turned his back on it. But if you have truly taken your stand behind Jesus and given Him your heart, then on this jubilee you can rejoice: \u2018I will sing to the Lord\u2019. To Him be the thanks; to Him the crown of honour!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The speaker ended with a forceful appeal to young people to join the association, and to parents to pray for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Reformed Boys’ Association \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Reformed Boys’ Association \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019, which meets every Sunday in Irene Hall<\/a>, held its annual meeting there last Friday. After the singing of Psalm 119, verses 3 and 5, Mr P. Rhebergen, one of the association’s leaders, opened the meeting with prayer, read Proverbs 3:1\u201324 and then delivered his opening address, warmly welcoming the parents and other interested people present at this 26th annual meeting.<\/p>\n\n

He then referred to a slight decline in membership, caused by many members moving on to the Reformed Young Men’s Association. Encouragingly, parents showed considerable interest in the Boys’ Association and sent their sons to its meetings of their own accord. The opening address concluded with an appeal to remain faithful to the association’s principles.<\/p>\n\n

Reports from the secretary, treasurer and librarian followed. The secretary’s report showed that ten members, all of whom received a certificate, had moved on to the Young Men’s Association. The association currently had 26 members. The treasurer’s report was quite favourable and showed the willingness to contribute to the boys’ work. The library now contained 45 items, with fifteen new books having been acquired during the previous year.<\/p>\n\n

After the reports came presentations on \u2018The conversion of Paul\u2019 by B. ter Maat, \u2018Absalom\u2019 by W. Rhebergen, church history on John Knox by G. Deunk, and Dutch national history by G. Stronks and H. Lammers. These presentations showed that serious work was being done within the association. The recitations were all very well received. Mr C. Spaans, representing the church council, urged the members to read a great deal and, above all, to read the Book \u2013 God’s Word. Mr G.W.J. van Lochem spoke on behalf of the parents’ committee about the German mission and the lives of colonial officials in the Dutch East Indies. Representatives of the Young Men’s Associations Calvijn and Kuyper and the Boys’ Association Samuel also said a few words, wishing the association God’s richest blessing. Because of the late hour, several others were unable to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr A.J. Heinen, one of the association’s leaders, gave a short closing address, pointing out to parents that it was essential to discuss the work of the Boys’ Association within the family. If the subject for the ordinary weekly meeting was discussed beforehand, this could only be of great benefit and bear rich fruit. With that, the festive meeting came to an end. During the various breaks there was singing and refreshments, and after Psalm 150, verse 1, had been sung and Mr A.J. Heinen had led the closing prayer, everyone went home well satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

50th anniversary of C.J.M.V. \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the coming days the Christian Young Men’s Association \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 in Aalten will commemorate its golden jubilee. The occasion will be marked next Sunday in a special youth service in the Dutch Reformed church, at which Rev. Gordeau of Eibergen is expected to officiate. A few facts: founded in 1887 by Rev. W. ten Kate, \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 has managed to remain active throughout turbulent times. One of the association’s first leaders was Mr G.A. Peters (Hogestraat<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, meetings were held in the Avondvrede Rest Home<\/a>, but in 1897 the association moved to the catechism room. Among the first committee members we may mention G. Hoitink and W. Bulsink (Nonhof), the former serving as chairman for many years. The present committee consists of J.W. Ros, J. Breukelaar, H. Stegeman, H. te Kampe and B. Meinen. Even during the war years the work did not cease. Meetings were suspended for only six months; otherwise they continued throughout those years. Even people in hiding found their way to the association’s meetings and greatly valued the opportunity to spend a few hours in its atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The atmosphere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One may ask: \u2018What exactly is the atmosphere of such an association?\u2019 It is difficult to answer. One really has to have worked within an association oneself in order to understand it. The study of Holy Scripture comes first, but alongside it the members work on their cultural development. Naturally, a youth movement reaches only part of the church’s young people. Many do become church members but hesitate to make a personal commitment to a Christian association. Yet such associations are of particular importance in rural areas. In them, young people learn to know themselves and are given the opportunity to develop and take responsibility. The essays they prepare compel them to study at home, and through that study their interest grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 currently has several clubs, each covering a particular field, even including music. We also recall the amateur dramatic performances staged over the years. In this way \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 works for the spiritual and cultural development of its members and has achieved a great deal over these fifty years. There is a fresh spirit among the members, giving every reason for confidence in the future. We therefore have no doubt that this jubilee, which will be commemorated in a fitting manner, will help more young men find their way to \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

C.J.V. \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 in Aalten celebrates its golden jubilee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was in 1897, on the initiative of the then minister of the Dutch Reformed church in Aalten, that the C.J.V. was founded; it later took the name \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019. Originally it was a mixed association, holding its regular meetings in \u2018Avondvrede\u2019. Soon after the club was founded, however, the \u2018Elim\u2019 building became its meeting place, where the members, often with the assistance of the minister, discussed their subjects. As a rule, the first part of the evening was devoted to discussing a chapter of the Bible. No formal paper was presented by a member; instead, the minister explained the text or, if he could not be present, the members did so themselves. The rest of the evening provided variety in the form of an essay on a free subject or a recitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surviving records show clearly that the members did not lack enthusiasm. The \u2018chronicles\u2019 of 1899 already mention attempts to establish a singing association, in the hope that this would attract greater interest in the association. Apparently these efforts came to nothing because there were still too few members. One of the difficulties was the financial position, which made another increase in subscriptions necessary only two years after the association was founded. At the meeting of 30 October 1898 it was \u2018unanimously resolved to increase the subscription by\u2026 3\u00bd cents per quarter, allowing the association to collect 0.60 guilders annually from each member\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, however, the situation improved considerably, and numerous bequests enabled the members to build up a substantial library. Membership was initially around ten, but later grew strongly and more than doubled within a few years. Among these were several junior members, who eventually formed their own club as a subsection of Timothe\u00fcs. Thus the small beginning developed into an association which now, in addition to its Boys’ and Singing Association sections, has more than thirty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 in wartime<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Steady progress became much more difficult during the final years of the war. Yet the members’ determination proved unbreakable, and German coercion and threats could not overcome the energetic will to carry on. Only during the final six months of the war was it considered irresponsible to continue the work under the circumstances. One of the first difficulties the association faced in this period was a shortage of fuel. The opportunity was therefore taken to meet in Mr Vaags’s bakery. Later \u2018Avondvrede\u2019 became the meeting place, until in 1944 the growing danger of bombing raids and round-ups finally made further activity impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, greater variety had been brought into the association’s work through the creation, on the initiative of one of the members, of several different clubs. There was, for example, a preparation group responsible for selecting the subjects to be discussed and obtaining the necessary study material. An essay group dealt with other practical subjects that were not included in the regular programme. Finally there were groups for singing, music and recitation, whose task was to bring variety to association evenings.<\/p>\n\n

This \u2018wartime arrangement\u2019 proved very popular, and the groups still exist today to the full satisfaction of all Timothe\u00fcs members. The most important event of the war years was undoubtedly the commemoration of the association’s 45th anniversary in 1942. Circumstances made it impossible to celebrate the occasion on a large scale, so it was marked quietly in the intimate circle of members and supporters in the \u2018Elim\u2019 building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jubilee commemoration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It is now fifty years since C.J.V. \u2018Timothe\u00fcs\u2019 emerged from the declining mixed association. To commemorate this half-century, a youth service will be held next Sunday in the Dutch Reformed church, where Rev. H. Gordeau of Eibergen, son of the vice-chairman of the N.J.V., will speak.
