If anyone had not already realised that yesterday was to be a festive day, the early display of our beloved tricolour made it clear enough. The Winterswijk branch of the Gelderland Agricultural Society held an exhibition here of horses, livestock, agricultural produce and more. It opened at eleven o\u2019clock with an address by chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oudwinterswijk.nl\/kerkhoven\/singelweg-kerkhoven\/graven\/veeren-fam\/fam-veeren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Veeren<\/a> of Winterswijk. The organising committee in general, and <a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/persoon\/slicher-van-bath-adriaan-pieter\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mr Slicher<\/a> in particular, deserve every compliment for the efficient organisation, which allowed the programme to be followed punctually.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one o\u2019clock, once the prize-giving had been completed in good order, the musical matin\u00e9e began. A rapidly approaching thunderstorm brought rain, however, so it did not provide quite the enjoyment that had been expected. At three o\u2019clock, members of the society went to the premises of Mr Oosthout (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/oldaalten.nl\/en\/place\/aalten\/landstraat\/13-15\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hotel de Roskam<\/a>, OA<\/em>), where a fine dinner awaited them. The atmosphere was cheerful, and many toasts were proposed to people of various ranks and positions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concert, scheduled for seven o\u2019clock, was unfortunately disrupted by an <strong>unpleasant incident<\/strong>. Contrary to the programme, some people wanted the fireworks that were to precede the ball to be set off two hours early so they could begin dancing sooner. This led to a fairly <strong>serious conflict<\/strong> and considerable <strong>commotion<\/strong>. Although the matter was later treated as forgotten, it initially cast something of a shadow over the celebrations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At nine o\u2019clock, as scheduled, the fireworks supplied by Mr Ruijsch of Utrecht were set off and, judging by the thunderous cheers, were greatly enjoyed. This was followed by a very well-attended and lively ball, which continued in the best of spirits until late into the night.
