Overview
Borninkhof is a farm in the Aalten rural district of Haart. It is an old manorial estate, or ‘scholtenboerderij’, with a history dating back to 1281. For a long time the farm was in the hands of the Te Gussinklo family.
The farmhouse in its present form dates from 1882, as indicated by the date anchors, although it probably contains a much older core. The farmyard lies within the angle of the T-junction formed by Haartseweg and Bosweg. The imposing building stands diagonally to the junction on a leafy plot with mature trees and some avenue planting.
The farmhouse has a composite plan, one storey and an unusually high tiled gable roof. The brick elevations have rendered plinths. In the farm-section façade facing the public road is a central threshing-floor entrance beneath a basket arch, fitted with double doors containing six-pane windows. This façade also has several stable windows with iron frames. The date anchors alternate with two small oculus windows fitted with decorative glazing.

Gerhardt, steward at Bornnijnckhoff and his wife Naell, with Johan Holstein acting as her chosen and admitted guardian in this matter with her husband’s consent, voluntarily and without compulsion placed their legitimate under-age daughter Loth in manorial serfdom to the House of Bredevoort, to enjoy and bear the obligations of manorial law like other female serfs. In exchange, the noble Lord Jacob van Bronckhorst and Battenborch, Lord of Anholt, Banner Lord of Baer and Lathum and pledge-holder of Bredevoort, released Elsken, legitimate daughter of Berndt, steward at Bornnijnckhoff, and his wife Jenneken, from the serfdom by which she had until then been bound to the House of Bredevoort, leaving her free to enter into whatever lawful marriage or status she wished.

Salomon Arentsen was probably the owner and resident/user of Borninkhof in 1771 (monthly land-tax records). Gerrit Jan Gussinklo, steward at Borninkhof in Haart, and Harmen Jan Tenkink, steward at Tenkink in Ratum were heirs of Salomon Arentsen and Gesina te Borninkhof (Voluntary Protocol of Bredevoort 1809–1810, part 1). Gerrit Jan Gussinklo was married to Johanna Geertruid Arentsen, a great-granddaughter of Salomon Arentsen’s brother. Harmen Jan Tenkink was married to Johanna Hendrika Arentsen, a granddaughter of Salomon Arentsen’s brother.
Widow Geesken bought a house in Aalten in 1790 and remarried Harmen te Slaa (Aalten, 11-11-1736 – Aalten, 21-05-1806). Harmen was living at Borninkhof when he died. The purchase deed for the house states that she was the widow of Salomon Arentsen, who during his lifetime had been steward of Borninkhof. He had no children (transfer tax, 25th, 50th and 100th penny).

Gerrit Jan lived according to the Registre Civique at Borninkhof (Haart 35). According to the Land Registry, he also owned Borninkhof in 1832. They moved before 1823 to Aalten 267 (Markt 18), which he also owned in 1832. There he was an innkeeper.

Reinder’s mother, Enneken te Winkel, widow of Frerik Goorhuijs, lived with her son and daughter-in-law and died at Borninkhof on 01-05-1807.
