Overview
Aalten’s Municipal Works department was responsible for the technical development and day-to-day management of the municipality. Its work included roads and public space, sewerage, building and expansion plans, and practical municipal works.
The 1967 address directory lists the Municipal Works office at Nassaustraat 5.
Activities
Municipal Works was involved in Aalten’s physical development. The department’s director, for example, produced a revised plan for development around Meiberg. The service was also involved in municipal sewerage and wastewater treatment.
The department carried out practical work on behalf of the municipal authority. In 1961 its employees demolished an unauthorised pig shed in the rural district of Dale under police supervision. Staff also performed highly specialised duties: S. Douma, who retired in 1963, worked for the department as Aalten’s rat catcher.
After the death of architect Jan Brill, Tilbusscher became the municipal architect within Municipal Works, assisted by H. Rollman.
