Markt 7, Aalten

Overview

Until 1818, the village of Aalten was administered as part of the district of Bredevoort. That year the district was divided into three new municipalities: Aalten, Dinxperlo and Winterswijk. From 1826, Hesselink’s substantial town house on the Markt was used as the town hall. In 1843 the municipality purchased the house and had it converted into a permanent municipal hall. Between 1830 and 1877 the cantonal court was also based in this building. It is a national monument.
