Tuindorp, Aalten

In the 1920s, the Vereniging tot Verbetering der Volkshuisvesting (Association for the Improvement of Public Housing) built eighteen workers’ houses in Aalten on the corner of Admiraal de Ruyterstraat and Van Heemskerckstraat.

This small neighbourhood was known in Aalten as the ‘Tuindorp’ — literally ‘garden village’ — a name reflecting a nationwide housing movement of the period. Across the Netherlands, so-called garden villages were being built as green residential districts offering workers spacious, healthy homes with their own gardens.

Aalten’s Tuindorp was also known as the ‘Rooie Dorp’ (‘Red Village’), because of the houses’ red roof tiles.
