't Paske

Overview

The earliest information we have about ‘t Paske farm in Dale is an entry from 1618, when ‘Dat godt Passche’ was owned by the Coeverden family. Its size was expressed in measures of sown land, days of labour and loads of hay. Under the name Te Paske, the property appears in 1840 as belonging to the Winterswijk scholte farmer Gerrit Tenkink. In 1863 it passed to Jan Albert Tenkink of Beestman in Haart. The old farm was demolished in 1867, and the new Paske was built that year on a plot of pine woodland.

In a division of an estate in 1919, the property passed to Gerrit Tenkink of Zuijlenkamp in Hummelo. It remained in this family’s hands until 1975.

In the resident lists from the early nineteenth century, the Te Paske family appears as tenants and residents of the farm in Dale. It is not known whether the family took its name from the farm.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the head of the household was farmer Hendrik Jan te Paske (1786–1865), married to Catriena Wilhelmina Lievers. The resident lists also contain the names of dozens of live-in farmhands and maids over time, suggesting that this was already a substantial farm. Through marriage, the surname of the residents changed first to Papiermolen and later to Wentink. After the tenancy ended, the Duenk family, who were not related to the Wentinks, became the residents from 1935.

During the war, church services were held on the threshing floor of ‘t Paske because of fears of raids in churches. The future local historian J.G. ter Horst played the organ there as a young boy. In 1978 the farm was listed as a monument. The heritage description mentions distinctive old sash windows, pointed gables with timber boarding, wall anchors forming the date ‘1865’, a panelled front door with an attractive fanlight, an arched wagon entrance with block detailing, and a timber barn.

‘t Paske is a national monument.
