Zij woonden waarschijnlijk op boerderij ‘Het Slaa’ in de Heurne. Toch was het Slaa geen ‘horige’ boerderij van het Hof te Bredevoort. Waarschijnlijk waren de bewoners dienstbaar aan het Hof en/of waren zij ‘hoofdtijnsplichtig’.

In de Judiciële Protocollen van Bredevoort rond 1550 worden ’them Slade’/’ten Sla’ genoemd. Ook in de 14e en 15e eeuw wordt de boerderij ‘Slade’ genoemd. De boerderij (Groot) Slaa bestond dus al voor 1500 en behoort tot de middeleeuwse boerderijen onder Aalten.

De toevoegingen ‘Groot’ en ‘Klein’ worden overigens sinds eind 18e eeuw niet meer gebruikt. In een advertentie in 1918 wordt de boerderij (Klein) Slaa aangeduid als ‘Oud Slaa’, ter onderscheiding van ‘Nieuw Slaa’ dat in dezelfde advertentie wordt vermeld. In 1823 vinden we in het bevolkingsregister drie huishoudens/boerderijen onder de naam ‘Slaa’ (Heurne 2, 3 en 4).
