Bredevoort, 12 May. The coronation celebrations took place here yesterday according to programme. Early in the morning, cannon fire and the ringing of all the bells announced that Bredevoort was to celebrate. Indeed, never before had our little town looked so festive. There was not a street, whether a main street or a more outlying one, that was not tastefully decorated with greenery and provided with triumphal arches, some bearing very appropriate inscriptions. Numerous banners flew both from the church tower and from the houses of the inhabitants. Blessed with the finest spring weather, the festivities brought an immense crowd onto the streets, yet throughout this mass of people an undisturbed cheerfulness and remarkable sense of harmony prevailed.
Eight prizes were offered in the shooting competition. First prize was won by H. Frenken of Bredevoort, second by Wechelaar of Varsseveld, third by Ormel of Haart, fourth by Schaapveld of Bredevoort, fifth by Dammers of Bredevoort, sixth by Voltman of Eibergen, seventh by Brethouwer of Barlo and eighth by Heijink of Bredevoort.
The festive address, delivered by Mr D.B. Moll, head teacher in Bredevoort, was answered by the mayor, Mr L. Roelvink, who suitably thanked the speaker for carrying out his far from easy task. The popular games, consisting of pole climbing, biting cakes suspended on strings and sack racing, provided an enjoyable change. The cheerful enthusiasm of the young people delighted many onlookers, especially as their songs were accompanied by brass music. The illumination of ‘t Zand was splendid and the fireworks were well received. For a long time indeed, these celebrations will remain in the memory of the people of Bredevoort.
