Important notice to all our subscribers and advertisers

“When the tide turns, the beacons must be moved!”

We have placed this proverb above our notice because it is highly appropriate in the present case. We have come to the conclusion that the tide is turning for the Aaltensche Courant and its associated editions. Moving the beacons will, in this case, lead to substantial changes.

So what is happening?

Because of major increases in the price of paper, wages and social charges, it would be necessary to raise the subscription price of our newspaper.

At the same time, we are repeatedly asked questions which show that, although the Aaltensche Courant is appreciated, it cannot adequately satisfy the demand for news. We regularly receive requests to publish three times a week, for example, and to expand the content with radio schedules, picture stories, a photo page, dialect pieces, a questions column and so on.

If we were to meet even some of these requests, the subscription price would have to rise yet again, placing it at an unfavourable level compared with larger newspapers in this area.

We have therefore concluded that we can better serve our readers by combining the Aaltensche, Dinxperlosche, Varsseveldsche and Lichtenvoordsche Courant with another regional newspaper that does meet these various wishes.

With effect from 1 April 1950, we have entered into a partnership with N.V. Uitgevers Mij. C. Misset of Doetinchem, under which our newspapers will be combined with the well-known Graafschap-Bode.

For little more than the Aaltensche Courant itself would have cost, subscribers will therefore receive a newspaper three times a week after 1 April which, both in the quality and breadth of its content, meets every reasonable requirement.

Local news coverage, the registration of subscribers and the placing of advertisements will continue to be handled by our office as before, as a branch office of the Graafschap-Bode will be established here. The local editor, Mr H. Weidema, will also continue his valued contribution to the new combined newspaper.

For contract advertisers, there is this further piece of good news: any unused millimetres under current contracts can, if desired, be placed in the Graafschap-Bode at the same price, giving much wider publicity thanks to its large circulation area.

We trust that our subscribers will understand and appreciate this decision and that they will all remain loyal subscribers to the Graafschap-Bode.

Finally, a sincere word of thanks to everyone who, in whatever way, has contributed to the Aaltensche Courant.
