Ten Hietbrinks Bewaarschool

Overview

Ten Hietbrink’s Nursery School was an early nursery school at Prinsenstraat 27 in Aalten. It opened on 6 January 1887 and was closely associated with the Ten Hietbrink family.

The school had one large room with a wooden floor, a sandpit behind the building and simple play equipment. A shed behind the school also formed part of the play area.

School life and the war years

Former pupils recalled Miss Stokreef as head of the school. School outings were also organised, including a trip to Loohuisbos in 1946.

During the German occupation, the school was affected by anti-Jewish measures. From 1 September 1941 Jewish children were no longer allowed to attend.

The nursery school was still recorded at this address in 1934. In 1963 the property passed into the ownership of the Dutch Protestant Association, which subsequently used the building as a church. The precise date on which the nursery school ceased operating has not yet been established.
