AMRO Bank operated a branch in the building at Markt 18 in Aalten during the 1960s. Banking on this site pre-dated the AMRO name: the premises had previously been used by the Co-operative Middle-Class Savings and Credit Bank and the Amsterdamsche Bank.
Markt 18
In 1931 the villa at Markt 18 became the property of notary J.H.W. Mensink, who had office space added at the rear. The Co-operative Middle-Class Savings and Credit Bank was also housed there. After Mensink’s death, the property passed to the bank in 1943.
In 1951 the building was acquired by the Amsterdamsche Bank, which later became part of AMRO Bank. The 1967 Aalten address book lists AMRO Bank at Markt 18.
Alterations
The bank building was extensively altered in 1965. Much of the existing interior layout, including the staircase and rear façade, was removed. The front façade also lost part of its original decorative detailing in several stages.
The building is no longer used as a bank. In 2009 the former bank premises were converted into a shop with a flat above. The wider architectural and residential history is covered on the Markt 18 place page.
