Admiraal de Ruyterstraat 5, Aalten

Molen op 't Rot / van Hakstege

Overview

The mill known as ‘op ‘t Rot’ stood between the house at Admiraal de Ruyterstraat 7 and the former Breukelaar school, the MULO, on Piet Heinstraat. This neighbourhood was known as ‘t Rot. Locally, the mill was commonly called the ‘Van Hakstege mill’.

The mill was built in 1896 by Derk Hakstege (1860-1953), on the site of an earlier mill that had burned down. Its predecessor was an octagonal smock mill on a mound called De Knotte.

His son Abraham Wessel Hakstege (1889-1964) was about seven years old when the new mill was built. The bricks were brought in by rail and transported onward by horse and cart. The distance between the station and the construction site was roughly 300 to 400 metres, and the boy was given the task of accompanying the horse and cart.

Dismantling

In 1931, the mill was stripped of its sails because the cost of a new windshaft, which was then required, could not be met. The mill suffered severe storm damage in 1952. Around 1970, the remaining tower was also removed.

After his father’s death, Abraham Wessel became owner of the mill on 1 July 1954. Owing to illness, old age and the absence of a successor to continue as miller, the mill was sold on 27 September 1963 to the Breukelaar school, which needed the land for expansion.
