Bredevoortsestraatweg 19, Aalten

Overview

This building originally dates from the final quarter of the nineteenth century, when it was erected as commercial premises.

In 1926, Aalten architects H.J. te Brake and G.J. te Brake converted it into a shop with living accommodation for R. Wagterveld. The front façade remained virtually unchanged during the alterations.

The building makes an important contribution to the character of this part of Bredevoortsestraatweg because of its substantial main form and distinctive gable, with characteristic detailing in a restrained Neo-Renaissance style. It also illustrates the development of the village centre as shops increasingly appeared there.

Church organ factory

On 27 February 1917, the partnership Kerkorgelfabriek N.A. van den Berg was established in Aalten. Its partners were Nicolaas Alexander van den Berg (Zwijndrecht, 1884) and the Aalten manufacturers J.W.J. Driessen and Willem te Gussinklo Jr.

The company built and supplied church organs throughout the Netherlands. Van den Berg also undertook smaller jobs such as tuning and repairing organs and pianos.

Merger

The Aaltensche Courant of 4 October 1921 announced that Van den Berg had left the partnership and that, from 1 October that year, the Aalten church organ factory had merged with J.J. Elbertse & Co. of Utrecht. The new company continued as the Vereenigde Kerkorgelfabrieken, with Aalten as its head office.

After leaving the partnership, Van den Berg continued advertising for some time as an independent organ builder. His house number was then C441, now Patrimoniumstraat 6 in Aalten. He later moved to Rotterdam, where he died in 1931 at the age of 47.

J.J. Elbertse

Organ builder Johannes Josephus Elbertse lived in the early 1920s at Polstraat 26 in Aalten. In 1910 he had married a woman from Winterswijk in Utrecht. One possible explanation for the later co-operation is that Elbertse and his wife would have travelled through Aalten when visiting her family in Winterswijk. Nicolaas van den Berg’s church organ factory lay along the route, and may have attracted his attention, eventually leading to their co-operation and merger. The Elbertse family left for Utrecht on 1 July 1922.

A newspaper report indicates that the church organ factory disappeared from Aalten in early 1926.

Organs

Some church organs built by the Aalten factory include those in Denekamp, Geesteren, Rotterdam, Stiens and Vogelenzang.
