Landstraat 6, Aalten

Overview

In 1904, butcher Jacob Spier commissioned a distinctive Jugendstil building with a small tower on this site. It was designed by the Winterswijk architect J. J. Post.

Abraham van Gelder opened his butcher’s shop here around 1910. He married Reintjen de Jong from Apeldoorn in 1907. His shop was certainly established in Landstraat by 1920.

Together with his brother Levie, who had a butcher’s shop on Dijkstraat, he supplied kosher meat to Aalten’s Jewish community. Other Jewish butchers who did not slaughter according to kosher rules also bought their kosher meat from the Van Gelder brothers.

During the German occupation in the 1940s, Jewish shops were forced to close. Abraham and Reintjen initially moved to Stationsstraat 24. From there, they went into hiding at an address in Oosterkerkstraat.

On 22 August 1944, they were betrayed and arrested. They were taken to Auschwitz on the last deportation train to leave the Netherlands, on 3 September 1944, and were murdered there on 6 September 1944.

A photograph in our archive shows that the Nederlandsche Unie organisation had an office in the building around 1940–1941.

The building was probably demolished in the 1960s and replaced with a new one. That building was itself demolished around 2007 to make way for the Hof van Leerink development.

Intertoys toy shop occupied this address until 2020.
