Overview

De Neeth is a historic farm in the Aalten hamlet of Barlo, with a history stretching far back. FormerADW archivist D.W. Kobes wrote in 1969 that De Neeth was one of Barlo’s oldest farms, probably founded as a manor farm in the time of Charlemagne. According to Kobes, the line of the old moat was still clearly visible.

The origin of the name ‘De Neeth’ is unclear. In 1997 Henk Harmsen wrote about De Neeth in the Gelders Dagblad, in the columnRoots in the Achterhoek . The article states that, according to the late local historian Ter Horst, the earliest known written reference to De Neeth dates from around 1300. The source of that reference is unknown, however. The name does not occur in B.H. Slicher van Bath’s list of East-Netherlands place and farm names up to 1500 in ‘Man and Land in the Middle Ages’. This could mean that the farm formerly had a different name.

De Aaltense historicus E. Smilda suggested that the name ‘De Neeth’ may be a corruption of ‘den Heet’, dialect for heathland, referring to the extensive heath visible nearby on an 1863 cadastral map. He also recalled having heard the name ‘den Heethof’.

Central role

In Aalten’s 1647 land-tax register, De Neeth is recorded as the joint property of Jonkheer van Coevorden and Jan ten Brincke. In 1748 a certain Berend te Neet was a district headman in Barlo, suggesting that De Neeth played a central role in the hamlet. Old maps show many roads converging in the area around De Neeth, which likewise points to a prominent position.

Before the paved Nijhofsweg existed, the Derredijk was the main road. It still runs as an attractive sunken lane through the high arable ridge behind De Neeth, towardsMarkerink. The present Nijhofslaantje, now a bridleway, was formerly called the ‘Neeths-laantje’ by the residents of farmNijhof.

Rebuilding

In 1899 De Neeth was bought by Theodorus Gerrit Jan Lammers of IJzerlo. A few years later the old house was demolished and the present house was built slightly higher up, reusing the old timber frame. The new farmhouse was completed in 1914. During construction, the Lammers family lived in the ‘schoppe’ (barn) beside the farm. For many years this building served as a cattle shed and as storage for grain. Since 2000 the barn has been used as a museum.

Moat

Harmsen also wrote that an 1863 cadastral map shows a straight moat about 75 metres long and 8 metres wide, some distance from the farm. Closer to the farm, an L-shaped body of water around De Neeth’s orchard can also be seen, connected to the moat by a ditch.

In 1984 the soil-research group of the ADW local historical society carried out boreholes between the farmsSchutte and De Neeth. Until theruilverkaveling of 1984, an old moat is said to have lain there; until the 1950s it was used as a skating rink in winter. Theo Sonderlo, grandson of Theo Lammers, said in 1997 that his grandfather had filled in the moat. The site of the former moat in the meadow is now protected as an archaeological soil archive.

A trial trench dug across the moat in 1978 by the Dutch Archaeological Working Group produced no finds. The investigation showed that the moat was 10 to 12 metres wide and no more than one metre deep. A peat layer lies at a depth of about 90 centimetres, which may indicate that the moat originated through peat extraction. Another theory, however, is that it was a natural extension of the nearby marshland known as ’t Goor.
