Today and tomorrow, a group of television makers from Japan is in Aalten to film an episode in a series of seven programmes about the Netherlands for Japanese television. The crew works for the Tokyo Broadcasting System and came to Aalten through the mediation of the regional Achterhoek tourist office in Zutphen.
The seven programmes about the Netherlands, each lasting about fifteen minutes, were filmed mainly in the large cities in the west of the country. The Japanese crew also wanted to capture life on a farm elsewhere in the Netherlands. Agricultural officials in The Hague, whom the Japanese had asked for advice, remembered the attention Aalten had attracted during a visit by Agriculture Minister P.J. Lardinois. The filmmakers did not want a specialised cattle or pig farm, but preferably a mixed farm where they could record several aspects of Dutch farming life at once.
Through the regional tourist office, they were referred to the farm of A.D.W. Houwers on Heijinkdijk in Aalten. After an initial discussion yesterday afternoon, the Japanese crew began filming this afternoon. The Houwers family was asked simply to follow its normal daily routine and not to stage anything special. The television crew also plans to visit the gondola parade in Bredevoort this evening, where footage may also be recorded.
