Record Number of Competitors on the Track
“Young talent on roaring machines” was the motto on Monday afternoon when Aalten hosted its second moped motocross. The event was a huge success: not only had the number of entrants doubled, but the crowd exceeded even the boldest expectations. Around 3,500 spectators watched the mostly young riders in action. For the Stichting Sportevenementen, which had first organised the event the previous year, it was undoubtedly an encouragement to continue.
The new ’t Landsbulten circuit proved ideally suited to the event, with varied terrain and strategically placed dips and jumps. Organisationally and technically, several points would require attention before the next race. Ticket sales had gone badly wrong on Monday, while too many competitors sometimes appeared at the start at once: both local youngsters and the “outsiders”, riders from other municipalities.
Exciting Final
The local riders competed in two heats and a repechage. Nine riders qualified for the final. Dicki Winkelhorst took a small lead from the start but had to defend it fiercely. His repeated attempts to shake off his main rival, Henk Neerhof, achieved little. With only about twenty metres to go it even looked as though Neerhof might win. Only at the finishing line did Winkelhorst secure victory by the narrowest of margins in a wheel-to-wheel finish. Eef Wamelink took third place, though not without difficulty.
‘Outsiders’
The riders from outside Aalten had three heats and two repechages. Two Aalten riders, G. Meyerman and G. Tervoert, also competed in this class. Meyerman had won the trophy for local riders the previous year, but because of his ability he no longer wished to defend it in that class. Like his rival Tervoert, he sportingly moved up to compete with the more highly rated outsiders.
He performed very well and finished second. W. Notten of Hengelo was third, while A. Ridderhof of Doetinchem won convincingly, reaching the finish half a lap ahead of his rivals.
A special attraction was a race for 150 cc motorcycles, with thirteen riders from outside Aalten. Jan Masselink of Steenderen won, followed by H. Schotman of Steenderen and J. Nieuwenhuis of Keyenborg.
H. Schaafs, chairman of the organising foundation, presented the prizes afterwards.
