Bertus Prinzen was born on 3 January 1906. Before the war he ran a grocery shop at Hogestraat 7 in Aalten. In 1947 he left Aalten for Canada, where he built a new life in Jarvis, Ontario.
Grocer on Hogestraat
B. Prinzen is listed at Hogestraat 7 in the 1934 directory. The property contained a shop and dwelling. Bertus worked there as a grocer. His wife was Lamberdina Willemina Wassink (1906), who also lived at this address.
One of the first emigrants
In 1947, Bertus Prinzen and Lamberdina Wassink emigrated to Jarvis, Ontario. A later Aalten newspaper article describes Bertus as one of the first emigrants from Aalten to Canada.
In Jarvis he made the transition from shopkeeper to farmer. He acquired a large farm with a livestock business. According to the article, Prinzen also held several positions in public life and became a source of advice for many new immigrants.
Support for newcomers
Canadian immigration reports give a concrete picture of that role. In 1951, a ‘Prinzen B’ at RR 4, Jarvis is named as a sponsor of Dutch immigrants, including Jan Prinzen from Aalten and Bertus Kamphuis from Apeldoorn. The combination of name, place of residence and period fits the picture of Bertus Prinzen as someone who helped newly arrived compatriots find their way in Canada.
Death
A Canadian church index records Bertus Prinzen of Jarvis, husband of Diane Wassink, with a date of death of 11 March 1990. Diane was the name used in Canada by Lamberdina Willemina Wassink.
