Kemena is not a street, but a former district of Aalten. When street names were formalised in 1933, Kemena was described as follows:
“District of scattered houses … comprising the land bounded by the section of Admiraal de Ruyterstraat from the railway line to the so-called ‘Tuindorp’ (the latter is deemed not to belong to Kemena), thence by a short straight line drawn northwards to the stream, then by the Slingebeek to Richterinkbrug, along Richterinkweg to its western end, and to the west by the boundary of the built-up area.”
In 1965, the expansion plan for the construction of 550 homes in the Kemena development area was adopted. Today this area roughly comprises Kemenaweg and the Planetenbuurt neighbourhood. The old and new situations can be compared clearly on Topotijdreis.
Nijverheidsweg
In 1958, Aalten municipal council decided to extend Kemenaweg from Admiraal de Ruyterstraat to Bocholtsestraatweg. This would later become Nijverheidsweg. The final route of Nijverheidsweg was eventually laid out west of today’s Kemenaweg, leaving Kemenaweg as a quiet residential street.
Address changes
Between 1934 and 1967, house numbering in the Kemena area changed so extensively that the relationship between the old and new numbering is not yet entirely clear to us. Some of the numbers and resident histories below may therefore be incorrect. Several homes in what was then the Kemena area were also demolished for the construction of the Planetenbuurt neighbourhood. Further research is needed.
Reportedly, the odd-numbered addresses on Kemenaweg above number 21 disappeared in the early 1970s to make way for Nijverheidsweg and the construction of homes in the Planetenbuurt neighbourhood.
The table below shows the addresses that we believe we have been able to match before and after 1967. Can you add to or correct this list? Please let us know!
