Overview
Aalten had two co-operative shops: Coöperatieve Winkelvereeniging ‘De Eendracht’ on Landstraat and the Roman Catholic co-operative ‘Ons Voordeel’ on the Markt. Which shop people preferred often reflected their religious background.
The photograph above of ‘De Eendracht’ dates from around 1930. The shopfront, and possibly the shop itself, was altered again afterwards. A later frontage included two round windows beside the entrance. In 1964 the entire building, including the old bakery, was demolished. A new building was erected for a SuperCoop supermarket. With its traditional butcher’s counter and fresh fruit and vegetable department, the new supermarket was something of a revolution in Aalten’s retail scene.
At the far left of the photograph is Hendrik Wiggers, the co-operative’s baker and brother of former sexton Wiggers. Third from the left is Adolph (Dolf) Wechgelaer, manager of the shop at the time, who continued working for many years in the later supermarket. Dolf Wechgelaer is about thirty years old in the photograph.
In the photographs below, number 35 is in the foreground (now Lelou Haarmode), with number 33 behind it, shown before and after construction of the present building in 1939 [source], formerly Ebbers Shoes. Next is number 31, on the left with a pediment, the former co-operative shop. That building was demolished and the open space is now used for deliveries and parking. Behind it stood number 29, which was also demolished; the Wibra shop now stands there (built in 1966 [source]).

Below left, viewed from the opposite direction, number 27 is in the foreground (then Lichtenberg chemist), followed by numbers 29 and 31, with number 33 behind them (formerly Ebbers Shoes), only the top of which is visible above the other buildings. The façades in the left- and right-hand photographs can also be compared.
