Shoemaker stayed at his last for sixty years
In 1958 shoemaker C.D. Baan celebrated sixty years in his trade. Almost everyone in Aalten knew him and his small, cosy workshop on Prinsenstraat.
He still hammered, pierced, patched and sanded there, remaining faithful to traditional handwork. He continued to use the same hammers with which he had worked on his first shoe soles sixty years earlier; their worn heads showed their age.
He had once considered switching to machines, near the end of the war. But on a tragic day his son, who had been intended to continue the family business, was killed in an air raid.
Modernisation suddenly seemed unimportant and pointless. It never happened. Baan therefore continued at the workbench he had made himself almost forty years earlier, in the same workshop without machines but with eight long rows of shoe lasts, the hallmark of his craft.
