The section of present-day Prinsenstraat in Aalten between Bredevoortsestraatweg and Veemarkt was called Achterstraat until 1934.
Residents disliked the old name. The street had been smartened up with pavements on both sides, and a new name was wanted. The naming of streets and roads was discussed by the municipal council. Achterstraat was renamed Prinsenstraat, after Schiller Prins and Prinsen butcher’s shop.
The new name was celebrated by residents in 1934 with music, including a serenade for a couple living in the street who were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. The first section of present-day Prinsenstraat, beginning near Café Schiller, was formerly called Kruisstraat.
