Textielfabriek Wijkamp

Overview

On 9 August 1971, the Nieuwe Winterswijksche Courant reported:

Wijkamp N.V. in Aalten closes weaving department

Employees in the weaving department of Wijkamp N.V. textile factory in Aalten were informed on Friday morning that they were to be made redundant. Seven people were affected by the closure of this part of the business. The garment-making and trading departments would continue as before.

The reason given for closing the weaving department was that it had been operating at a loss in recent years. Rising wages and associated social charges had pushed production costs so high that maintaining the weaving operation was no longer considered viable.

Attempts to introduce a three-shift system, which might have made the department profitable again, had also failed because insufficient staff could be recruited. The weaving work was transferred to a German weaving mill.

An application for the redundancies had been submitted to the regional labour office and the trade unions had been informed. Employees who wished to do so could take up work with another company willing to employ them.

Today, Auto Wisselink and Autoschade Aalten are based at this address.

At number 94, formerly Lintelo 192, lived H.L. Wijkamp with his wife and daughter-in-law, the widow A.H.A. Wijkamp-Pillen.
