Overview
The (Grote) Luthe is a farm in the Aalten rural district of Barlo. A stone above the end door bears the name “de Lüthe”. In ‘Farm and Field Names in Aalten’ the name is spelt “de Lute”. The 1967 address directory gives “Luiten”, while the Land Registry records the farm under names including “de Groote Luutte” and “Groot Luiten”.
At the end of 2017, (Grote) Luthe was put up for sale. Estate agent De Landerije described it as a “spacious and well-maintained residential farmhouse with many authentic features and large rooms offering scope for several seating areas. The high ceilings create a wonderfully spacious feel.”

Wendele, legitimate daughter of Gertz ten Gantenfordt and his wife Deve, with the consent and approval of her lawful husband Herman Luten, who was specially chosen and admitted as her guardian in this matter, voluntarily and without compulsion submitted herself to the House of Bredevoort as a serf attached to den erff und gude Luten , to enjoy and bear the obligations of manorial law like the other serfs of the House of Bredevoort. In exchange, my noble lord released Deve, legitimate daughter of the late Johan Luten and his wife Anne, from her serfdom.
The noble and well-born Lord Jacob van Bronckhorst and Batenborch, Lord of Anholt, acting in place of his noble father, released and discharged Deve, legitimate daughter of Johan Luten and his wife Anne, from the serfdom by which she had long been bound to the House of Bredevoort. In her place, as a lawful exchange for the benefit of the House of Bredevoort, he received Wendele, legitimate daughter of the late Gertz ten Gantenfordt and his wife Deve, into the same serfdom. Wendele had submitted herself to the House of Bredevoort through the manorial estate of Luten. His lordship promised to warrant the aforesaid freedom and discharge granted to Deve in the manner customary and lawful in this region. Without deceit.

The fragment below lists the following residents: “Steward Teunis Lutten, married to Janna te Welpshoff“. Ook staat er: “Mette ter Neet, wife of Garrit Jan Luiten, states that her husband is ill”. Garrit Jan was a son of Teunis and Janna) and “Aeltjen Papiermeule”. The latter had left (or returned?) for Pampiermole.
Daaronder staat nog: “Wander Klein Lutten, des selfs huisvr. Griete te Kolste”. This suggests that the farmKleine Luthe probably already existed at that time.
Overdrachtsbelasting Heerlijkheid Bredevoort 1786
On 26 April, 130 guilders were received from Garrit Jan Roerdink and Willemina Hijink for the Luiten manorial estate with all buildings belonging to it, the dependent cottager’s holding, arable lands, gardens, meadows, enclosed land, common or sod-cutting rights, timber and woodland, and all further appurtenances and dependencies situated in the Lordship of Bredevoort, parish of Aalten, rural district of Barlo. Specifically included were a hay meadow of about eight days’ mowing at the Barlosche Goor, a peat pool on the Barlosche Veen and four seats diagonally opposite the pulpit in Aalten church. Also included were all crops and produce, together with the manure and manuring rights on the estate, plus two horses, twelve head of cattle, wagons and other equipment. Purchased from Methe te Neeth, widow of the late Garrit Jan Luiten, and her eldest son Berend Luiten, with the consent required under manorial law, for 6,500 guilders, on 14 April 1786.

On 15-11-1622 Geesken Luijten, widow of Bernt Wolter(d)inck, transferred ‘dat erf und guet Wolterdinck’ to her son and daughter-in-law Johan Wolterdinck and Lotte Swijtinck, and transferred ‘dat Erff und guet Luijten guet genant’ to her son-in-law and daughter Thonijs Rensinck and Enneken Wolterdinck.
In 1623 Thonijs and Enneken voluntarily entered manorial serfdom.
