Overview
The Prins van Oranje is a round brick smock mill on a raised earth bank, with a felt-covered cap, built for grinding grain. The mill stands on a 3.5-metre-high mound, beneath which lies the six-metre-high Bastion Welgemoed, once part of fortifications of Bredevoort.
Around 1644–45, the Prince of Orange, as lord of Bredevoort, granted permission to build a post mill on Bastion Welgemoed. After it burnt down in 1869, the present mill was built on the same site in 1870. Construction took longer than usual because the German bricklayers had to serve as soldiers in the Franco-Prussian War. The mill was restored in 1968 and its machinery was restored again in 1991 and 1992.
