Jan Hendrik Bos was born on 2 July 1865 in Noordijk, municipality of Neede, the son of farmer Albertus Bos and Willemina Gerritdina Hungerink. Before coming to Barlo he lived in Aalten for some time. The 1900–1910 population register records him at what later became Prinsenstraat 25(a), where his occupation is given as teacher.
In 1906 Bos was appointed head teacher of the newly founded Christian National School in Barlo. The school association had been established in February that year. After the foundation stone of the school building was laid in June, lessons began on 2 November 1906 with 54 pupils and two teachers.
Bos lived in Barlo in the teacher’s house beside the school, later known as Alouette at Markerinkdijk 51. The population registers list him there as head teacher and teacher. He remained connected with the Barlo school for almost a quarter of a century. In July 1930 he stepped down because of his age. M.C. Weenink succeeded him as head of the school.
After retiring, Bos continued to live in Aalten. A Winterswijk marriage record from 1932 describes him as a 67-year-old without an occupation and living in Aalten. Jan Hendrik Bos died in Aalten on 5 January 1941, aged 75. He was buried at the Old Cemetery on Varsseveldsestraatweg, grave number 0498.
