Hun onderduikplaats was een kleine ruimte op zolder, verstopt achter hooi en stro. Overdag konden ze niet naar buiten, want dat was te gevaarlijk. Eten werd in een klomp door de dakgoot met behulp van een touw naar hen toegebracht. Door een gat in het dak konden ze het eten uit de klomp pakken. Zo ging ook het menselijk afval weer retour. In de avond als de kust veilig was, konden ze naar buiten.

Op een gegeven moment werd de familie Leezer verraden en verkaste bij nacht en ontij naar ‘Klein Heusinkveld’, even verderop aan de Aaltenseweg in Varsseveld.

Later in 1944 keerde de familie Leezer terug naar de Stroete en maakte daar de bevrijding mee. Ook daarna bleef het gezin nog een tijd op de Stroete, omdat andere mensen hun intrek hadden genomen in hun huis aan de Industriestraat. Later kwam dit goed en konden ze terug naar Aalten.
