Bodendijk, Lage Blik & De Hoven, Aalten
Albert Heijn has been a household name in Aalten for decades, but the supermarket has occupied several locations over the years. The first Albert Heijn branch in Aalten was situated on Bodendijk. Later, ‘Appie’ moved to Lage Blik. The premises on Bodendijk were subsequently occupied by the footwear and sportswear retailer Scapino.
On Wednesday 2 July 2008, Albert Heijn opened a new branch at De Hoven, on the site previously occupied by Edah (from 1993) and later Golff (2007–2008). The building on Lage Blik was later taken over by the retail chain Action.
The Albert Heijn at De Hoven was located above the library. Due to the differences in elevation in Aalten’s town centre, both the supermarket and the library were able to have their entrances at street level, with the latter situated on the lower-lying Hogestraat.
In 2023, the Albert Heijn at De Hoven underwent a major expansion and transformation. The shop floor grew from 1,300 to 2,800 square metres. The library below moved to Lage Blik, after which the vacated space was converted into a multi-storey car park. Three apartments were also created above the supermarket.
The new premises also house a Gall & Gall off-licence and a patisserie with a coffee corner by Kasper Paul.
