Overview
The School for Christian Popular Education (CVO School), also known as the Dutch Reformed School Op ‘t Zand, stood on the site of the former Bredevoort castle. Several school buildings occupied this location over a period of two centuries. After the Second World War, the old building was replaced by a new one. Since 2015 the building has housed a brewery.
In 1822 the local authority of Aalten invited tenders for the construction of a new school on ‘t Zand. The building was altered and extended in 1863. A few decades later, in 1885, another tender was issued, this time for alterations to the existing school and for a new four-classroom school building several dozen metres to the south-west of the old site. The older building was demolished shortly afterwards.
From public to Christian education
The school on ‘t Zand was originally a public primary school. Bredevoort had no Christian school. The Rev. Krul took the initiative to establish one. The School for Christian Popular Education officially opened on 16 November 1924.
During its first year, lessons were held in the consistory room of the Dutch Reformed Church and later in the former Ons Huis building on Prinsenstraat. The first headmaster was W. van Velden, who remained in post until 1951. The first female teacher was Miss Odé.
The catechism room on the Markt soon became too small. The municipal council was therefore asked to make several classrooms at the public school on ‘t Zand available. The request was granted, and for a time the building was used partly for public and partly for Christian education.
As pupil numbers grew, a new public school was built on Schoolstraat in 1929. The school on ‘t Zand then continued independently as a Dutch Reformed school.
Demolition and new building
After the Second World War, the school building was in poor condition. It was demolished and replaced by a new six-classroom primary school designed by Mr Siemons. Headmaster Mr Van Velden was succeeded by Mr Droppers in 1954, and in 1972 Mr P. van Beelen took over.
Repurposing
In 1993 the Protestant primary school on ‘t Zand merged with the Catholic Joannesschool to form the interdenominational primary school ‘t Bastion. After the building ceased to be used for education, it stood empty. In 2015 it was given a new use as Stadsbrouwerij De Borghman, once again giving the building a central role in community life in Bredevoort.
