Overview
At the beginning of the 20th century, the old village farmhouse at Markt 9 housed Walvoort’s grocery shop. On the Landstraat side of the house, a beam above the large doors bore the inscription “OCH GODT LAT DIR BEVOLEN SYN DIT HUIS UND DIE DAER WOENEN IN. DEN 30 AUGUSTI”. There was no room left for a year.
In 1925 the Municipality bought the building and converted it to house the fire engines. The front façade was opened up for this purpose.
In 1975 the old fire station was demolished to make way for an extension to the town hall. Many residents of Aalten felt that the modern new building detracted from the historic square. The town hall was renovated in 2016 and 2017, when the 1970s extension was demolished and replaced by a new building designed in a historicising style.
