Overview
Until the mid-19th century, the main border crossing into Germany was not at its present location on the Hamelandroute (then still called the Bocholtscheweg), but more than a kilometre farther east. Today this is the ‘green border crossing’ on the Bodendijk.
At that time, the border office was not located directly on the national border itself, but several hundred metres inland, near the Kieftshutte.
The Bodendijk had traditionally been the main road from Aalten to Bocholt. It was therefore no coincidence that after the Reformation — when Catholics in the Netherlands were not permitted to practise their faith — the Bishop of Münster had the Kruiskapel built on the German side of this road in 1675.
In 1859, the border office was moved to a new building at the present border crossing, as had been announced in the Staatscourant a year earlier.
The former border office near the Kieftshutte was probably converted into a farm after the revenue officers left. We believe the residents of the farm called ‘Achterop’ then moved here and brought the name with them.
