Overview
The Juliana School in Aalten was the regional Christian school for special primary education. It provided education for children with learning difficulties and was an initiative that received broad support from Aalten and neighbouring municipalities.
The initiative to establish the Juliana School came from Rev. Gerritsma, Rev. Plug, Dr Jenny, and Messrs Swijtink and Westerveld. The school association was founded on 14 April 1937. After two and a half years of preparation, the Juliana School opened on 3 November 1939.
The school was housed in a distinctive green wooden building designed by the Aalten architect Willem Hebly.
At the end of the Second World War, the building was temporarily renamed ‘Prince Bernhard Barracks’ and used as a base by the Dutch National Battalion.
