Overview
The Roman Catholic St John’s School in Bredevoort was built around 1908 on the site where the Aalterpoort city gate once stood. In the early 1980s the school moved to Izermanstraat. After the building lost its educational function, it was demolished and apartments were built on the site.
In 1897 parish priest Bernardus Mulders bought the Roelvink family’s house on ‘t Zand in Bredevoort. His aim, as he wrote, was to offer his ‘poor children’ a Roman Catholic education. Because Roman Catholic schools cost money at the time, he devised a practical solution: he brought nuns to Bredevoort, who established a convent and sanatorium in the former steward’s house. Using the profits from the sanatorium, the priest started an elementary school: St John’s School.
In 1993 St John’s School merged with the Protestant primary school Op ‘t Zand to form the interdenominational primary school ‘t Bastion.
