Overview
Wakel Slat is a privately owned farm museum in Haart, Aalten. Hidden in the green rural landscape, thirteen separate buildings and structures tell the story of 150 years of farming life. The name ‘Wakel Slat’ comes from the local dialect: wakel means juniper and slat refers to a marshy hollow. Both words refer to the historic landscape of the area.
The buildings came from the area around Aalten and were carefully dismantled by Mr Te Bokkel over a period of about 45 years, then rebuilt stone by stone. His attention to detail and craftsmanship created an impressive open-air museum.
The museum includes a smithy, bakehouse, cart sheds, a farmhouse with a gin distillery, box beds and a clog-making workshop. Inside are hundreds of original objects, including historic agricultural machines such as fertiliser spreaders, seed drills, sprayers, mowers, hay rakes and potato planters.
