Overview
The Wilhelmina School was a Protestant Christian elementary school in Aalten, founded in 1884. The school began on Hogestraat and moved around 1925 to a new building on Stationsstraat. At the beginning of this century, the school became part of De Triangel Primary School. The former school building is now used as a bed & breakfast.
The Wilhelmina School began in 1884 on Hogestraat in Aalten, in what later became known as Irene Hall. Around 1925 the school moved to Stationsstraat, where many generations of Aalten residents received their education.
The school building was ceremonially opened in 1925. Rapid growth in pupil numbers led to an extension as early as 1930: an upper floor with two additional classrooms was added. Well-known former teachers included Miss Lammers, Mr Hengeveld, Miss Van Diemen de Jel, Mr Van Boven and Miss Drupsteen.
The name of the school is prominently displayed on the front façade, with the inscription School met den Bijbel (‘School with the Bible’) beneath it. In 2009 there was controversy when the Municipality of Aalten removed this text. Following protests from the community, the removal was quickly reversed.
At the beginning of this century, the Wilhelmina School merged with Rev. Stegeman School and De Morgenster to form De Triangel Primary School.
After the school closed, the building lost its educational function. The Municipality of Aalten then temporarily used the premises as office space. Around 2018 the building was sold and given its present use as B&B De Wilhelminaschool.
