Muizenstraat, Bredevoort

Muizenstraat in Bredevoort’s old centre is a tiny street about twenty metres long. It begins as a side street off Markt and originally continued through to Prinsenstraat, but is now a cul-de-sac.

The street probably owes its name to its small size. In 1782, a house here is recorded as the “Muizenkasteel”. It is not known whether the house was named after the street or the other way round. It is the smallest street in Bredevoort and perhaps even the smallest street in the Netherlands.

Hendrickje Stoffels, who later became the partner of the world-famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn, was born in Muizenstraat in Bredevoort. In 2006, a sign was unveiled marking the location of her family home in the street.
