At the end of 1973, the Netherlands was in the grip of the oil crisis. The crisis was caused by a number of Arab oil-producing countries raising the price of oil by 70% and reducing oil production, causing the price per barrel to skyrocket. The oil crisis had a major impact on the global economy. In the Netherlands, a number of car-free Sundays were announced from November 1973 to January 1974. Furthermore, petrol was rationed. “Oiled”
The oil crisis inspired several residents of Keizersweg in Aalten to dress up as oil sheikhs in early 1974 and wish their fellow villagers a Happy New Year. Eventually, the group headed home in high spirits, quite “oiled”:
