Overzicht

According to its wall anchors, the original Ambthuis (Administrative House) dated from 1699. For a century, it served as the centre of power for the Heerlijkheid (Lordship) of Bredevoort. The Ambthuis was also known as the Mauritshuis, as Prince Maurice had clearly left an unforgettable impression on the local inhabitants.

Chief Court

Na de kruittorenramp van 1646 was stad en heerlijkheid Bredevoort zonder ambtshuis (combinatie van een rechtbank en stadhuis) geraakt. Het zou toch nog ruim vijftig jaar duren voordat er weer een nieuw ambthuis werd gebouwd. Waarschijnlijk was het gebouw verbonden met de Misterpoort, de stadspoort tegenover het huis. Het gebouw was tevens het hoofdgerecht van de heerlijkheid. In Aalten en Winterswijk waren ook rechtbanken, maar de zware vergrijpen werden altijd in Bredevoort behandeld. De drost fungeerde als rechter.

In de kelders bevonden zich een aantal cachots, cellen, en een gruwelkamer met de nodige werktuigen. De terdoodveroordeelden hadden een cel zonder daglicht en frisse lucht. Wilde je niet bekennen, dan was dreigen met de martelkamer vaak voldoende om schuld te bekennen. Het vonnis werd traditioneel uitgesproken op ‘t Zand. Bij een doodstraf werd de veroordeelde meteen naar de Galgenbulte op de Hollenberg gebracht voor uitvoering van het vonnis. Meestal betekende dit ophanging aan de galg die daar al eeuwenlang op slachtoffers stond te wachten. Het schijnt dat je de galg vanaf de Aalterpoort kon zien staan. Voor de plaatselijke bevolking was zo’n executie sensationeel. Heel Bredevoort en Aalten liep dan ook uit om dit mee te maken.

Other Functions

Na de Franse tijd verloor het gebouw haar functie en was het onder andere in gebruik als winkelpand van de katholieke coöperatie. In 1920 werd deze opgericht door de arbeidersvereniging. Vroeger gingen de katholieken naar deze winkel en wie een andere geloofsovertuiging had, ging naar de andere coöperatie iets verderop in de Landstraat.

The Ambthuis was demolished around 1963. The cellars of the Ambthuis, which included two prison cells, were still located beneath the shop. In 1964, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the Betting furniture store on this site. This building was in turn demolished in 2009, after Betting moved to new premises on Prins Mauritsstraat.

New Construction

Today, the site of the old Ambthuis is occupied by a care apartment complex consisting of twenty apartments and a restaurant. The new building was again given the name ‘Ambthuis’. In terms of its exterior, the new building bears many similarities to its illustrious predecessor. A replica of the historic sundial was attached to the building, and a replica of the bandstand was placed in front of it. An original gable stone from the old Ambthuis was built into the front facade, bearing the inscription: “Die kan lide haet en nijt, die overwint in korten tijd” (He who can endure hate and envy, shall overcome in a short time).
