Overview

The building at Haartsestraat 10 in Aalten has had a varied history. It was built in 1860 as a house, served briefly as a secondary school and was used as a post office from 1922 to 1986. It subsequently acquired other uses, including office space for various businesses.

From house to school

The building on Haartsestraat, then known as Gasthuisstraat, was originally built as a house. Over the years its residents included notary Bernard Andries Roelvink, notary John Bernard William Maitland, physician Maurits Jagerink and mayor W.C. Tack, who lived there until his death in 1915. After being rented out for a time, the building was given a new purpose. From 1916 to 1918 it temporarily housed the Christian MULO school, until the school moved to a new building on Piet Heinstraat.

Post office

In 1922 the building was converted into a post office and the previous office at the corner of Kerkstraat and Peperstraat was vacated. The alterations and extension, including a low wing on the left-hand side, were designed by architect J.M. Luthmann. From then on the building served as Aalten’s post office for more than sixty years.

New uses

When the new post office on Peperstraat opened in 1986, the building lost its original function. It subsequently housed several businesses, including Houwer estate agents and the Randstad employment agency. In 2007 the eastern extension was demolished and replaced by a new development containing offices and apartments.

Present day

Today the former post office is let as office space to various businesses.
