In de loop der jaren heeft het verschillende functies gehad, waarbij de naam ‘De Postiljon’ steeds verbonden bleef aan het pand.

Het eerste postkantoor van Aalten

In het pand Kerkstraat 1 was het eerste postkantoor van Aalten gevestigd. Hier kon men terecht voor alle zaken die te maken hadden met Post, Telegraaf en Telefoon (PTT). Voor mensen zonder eigen telefoon beschikte het postkantoor over een ‘openbare spreekcel’. In 1915 waren er in Aalten slechts 27 telefoonaansluitingen, en Bredevoort telde er vier. Het waren vooral fabrikanten, middenstanders en huisartsen die een telefoontoestel hadden. Kammenfabriek Ten Dam & Manschot had de allereerste aansluiting in Aalten en kreeg dus telefoonnummer 1.

In 1922 verhuisde het postkantoor van de Kerkstraat naar de Haartsestraat, en later weer naar de Peperstraat. Tegenwoordig heeft Aalten geen eigen postkantoor meer en moet je voor postzaken naar de Primera.

Pension en modezaak

Hoewel het postkantoor verdween, bleef de naam van het gebouw verbonden met zijn geschiedenis. Na de verhuizing opende mevrouw Lammers-van Lochem ‘Magazijn De Post’ in het pand. Hier verkocht ze onder andere naaibenodigdheden en lingerie. Ook verhuurde ze kamers in het pand; het was tevens een pension.

In 1974 vestigde zich er ‘Postiljon Mode’ van Martin en Ann de Kruyf. De Postiljon was het adres voor jurken, blouses en overhemden. Men kon hier terecht voor kwaliteit en persoonlijke aandacht. Na 50 jaar in het modevak stopten Martin en Ann de Kruyf met hun zaak in het najaar van 2017.

Nieuwe bestemming

Na enkele jaren leegstand kreeg het historische pand in 2024 een nieuwe bestemming. Een keukenzaak opende haar deuren in het hart van Aalten, waarmee een nieuw hoofdstuk werd toegevoegd aan de geschiedenis van dit beeldbepalende gebouw.

Op de achtergrond van deze foto zien we nog net de Openbare Lagere School aan de Herenstraat. De kinderen van deze school zijn blijkbaar even uitgelopen om op de foto te mogen. Een fotograaf was honderd jaar geleden een bijzondere verschijning in het dorpsbeeld.
