Otto Hendrik Roschet

Otto Hendrik Roschet was an ‘imperial notary’ in the canton of Aalten in the early 19th century. He was baptized on November 24, 1769, in Arnhem, as the son of Willem Hendrik Roschet, steward of the ‘t Loo estate in Apeldoorn, and Arnolda Elisabeth Wakker. The surname was originally written as ‘Rochet’.

The first mention we have found of O.H. Rochet in Aalten dates from 1809, during the French period, with his profession listed as ‘lawyer’. In 1812, he was appointed notary in the canton of Aalten by imperial decree. In 1813, he lived on Kerkstraat.

His younger brother Theodorus Gerardus had settled in Aalten as a pharmacist in 1802, but passed away in 1804 at the age of 28 from “a severe putrid fever”. Whether Otto Hendrik was already living in Aalten at that time is unknown to us.

The last mention of Roschet as a notary in Aalten that we found dates from 1815. The next mention of him was found in the Arnhemsche Courant of February 6, 1816, in which he is listed as the steward of ‘t Loo in Apeldoorn. Subsequently, he was mentioned in the Arnhemsche Courant of April 4, 1816, as the acting mayor of Apeldoorn.

Otto Hendrik Roschet passed away on November 21, 1824, at the age of 55 at ‘t Loo in Apeldoorn. At that time, he was an overseer and captain in the garrison company there.
