Football club
Sportvereniging Bredevoort is a football club with around 260 members and plays at Sportpark ‘t Broock.
The club was founded on 25 May 1953 and initially played on a meadow where cows grazed during the week. Every week the cow manure first had to be cleared away before football could be played. There were no changing facilities.
When this field could no longer be used, another cow meadow was found. The club did not play there for very long either, and then found a site on Pastoorsdijk. This too was a cow pasture, but this time it had an excellent shelter for the cattle which the players could also use as a changing room. Another advantage was that they could fetch water from the Slinge stream.
Use of this meadow was also temporary. The club’s next ground was on De Bleke, where it was allowed to build changing facilities beside the Slinge. Volunteers built the changing and washing facilities using bricks from the former Gelderse Tram railway station. With permission from the PGEM electricity company, power could be tapped from Johan Ebbers’s connection. First, however, a cable had to be laid through the Slinge. Fortunately it was a very dry summer that year, allowing the cables to be taken across the bed of the stream.
After the site on De Bleke was designated for housing, the club had to move once again. This time the municipality provided the solution and developed the present sports ground.
Until the 1930s, the moat that in earlier centuries had protected the fortified town against enemies ran across this site. In 2022 a proposal was put forward to move the sports ground towards Slingeplas and restore this section of the moat.
